Art of the interview: Nardwuar vs. Skrillex

Skrillex

It was bound to happen. Nardwuar vs. Skrillex. The meeting of two unique personalities.

Sonny John Moore, aka Skrillex, has come a long way since his Mac hard drive crashed before a sold-out gig at the Majestic Theatre two years ago. In the aftermath of the show cancellation that night, the bewildered Skrillex hid in a corner of the venue while angry fans booed, nearly erupting into a full scale riot.

Evidently due to the reliability of Apple Macs, Skrillex had never backed up his hard drive which basically contained his entire show plus new material. Just think, lose the hard drive that night and we wouldn't have the Skrillex of today! The laptop was sent to the Madison Apple store who in turn shipped it to Seattle where the Apple experts eventually recovered the hard drive. These days, I'm sure Skrillex is using the cloud for backup with a paid employee dedicated to the task.

The self-proclaimed king of dubstep has become the poster child for electronic dance music around the world. Skrillex went from 600 seat theaters to auditoriums and huge festival gigs spearheading the popularity of dubstep for the masses. He gets a lot of flak, but you can't deny his impact. Most people don't know that he started his music career playing in California punk bands. It might be the reason why his mixes are so aggressive.

Nardwuar is a quirky Vancouver radio host who has the most uncanny interviewing technique that we've ever seen. He does his homework, pulling detailed information from a subject's background that catches them off guard in the interview. We first encountered Nardwuar when he hosted one of the BrooklynVegan SXSW showcases in Austin. In this session Nardwuar interviews Skrillex and his girlfriend Ellie Goulding while showering them with collectible music-related gifts...makes most bloggers want to re-evaluate their interview prep.
